Medication Statement

Hi,

Can anyone explain the reason for there being two similar references in FHIR MedicationStatement
That is basedOn and derivedFrom. Can anyone provide advice as to when and why you might use one rather than the other.

Thanks

Ewan

basedOn is saying “the patient is taking this med because of this prescription (or plan or proposal)”. The second is saying “we infer that the patient is taking this medication because we’re aware this prescription exists”. So there is a difference, but it’s subtle. Whether both are needed is a reasonable question. Feel free to submit a change proposal using the “propose a change” link at the bottom of the spec.

Thanks Lloyd. The difference is so subtle and quite hard to understand that It seems pointless to me to try and draw the distinction, but I discuss with colleagues here in the NHS and decide if it appropriate to suggest a change.
